WRITER
There is a rich history of magicians sharing their secrets with other magicians.
David writes non-fiction, primarily biographies and technical treatises related to the conjuring arts. He also writes theatrical works that he performs on stage.
His books include The Experts at the Card Table (2015), Slaight: Off Hand (2013), Zarrow: A Lifetime of Magic (2008), Dai Vernon: A Biography (2006), Tricks (2003) and Advantage Play (2001).
For the stage, his work includes Hocus Pocus (2016), Card Table Artifice (2014) with renowned English composer Gavin Bryars. He has also written Natural Magick (2011), Tricks (2004), The Conjuror’s Suite (1999) and The Conjuror (1996) with Canadian broadcasting legend Patrick Watson.
David has written articles and reviews for such newspapers and journals as The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, Literary Review of Canada, Magic, and Genii.
Since 2009, David has served as the editor and publisher of Magicol: A Journal of Magic History and Collectibles. His feature long-form articles for this journal include Dai Vernon: The Spirit of Magic (2017), Paul Fox: Mastery of Mystery (2014), and Popular Delusions and the Madness of Erdnase (2011).
David has also edited several projects including co-editing Magicana’s publication of The Magic of Johnny Thompson (2018), a critically-acclaimed, two-volume set documenting the magic of one of the conjuring arts most revered practitioner. He also provided direction and insight for Dai Vernon’s celebrated opus Revelation (2008).
